Positive Discipline is at the heart of our school’s success. We know that children learn best when they feel emotionally and physically safe, when they feel loved, when they know they belong and are significant in a community. In order to create this nurturing environment for our students, our primary task is to help them develop the skills that allow them to provide this sense of safety and belonging for one another.
The Positive Discipline approach, authored by Dr. Jane Nelsen, and based on the research of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs, offers a respectful and effective roadmap to teaching those skills, both in the classroom and in the home. If you missed it the first time, here is a link to January’s post on Positive Discipline and how we create a culture of belonging and respect here at NUA Sparrow.
The really exciting news is that Jane Nelsen, herself, is now our official Positive Discipline consultant, generously volunteering her time, positive energy, and vast treasure trove of experiences for our staff and parents, alike.
In addition to providing ongoing training and support for our staff, she has also volunteered to lead this week’s parent meeting on Positive Discipline in the home. Current and prospective parents are welcome to join us from 6-7:30pm this Thursday at our school, for free. Be prepared to spend a thoroughly enjoyable 90 minutes with this warm and wise woman.
